12 Month Health and Fitness program
Health coaching Gym or Pool membership assistance available Did you know the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) provides a free 12-month health and fitness program that can be delivered to ex-ADF members with overseas operational or peacekeeping service and those covered by the ADF firefighters scheme anywhere in the country? Examples of this include: – War or Warlike Service – Peacekeeping Service – Humanitarian & Disaster Relief – ADF Border Protection Service. The program is flexible and able to accommodate participants living in metropolitan areas, regional or remote areas, those still working or retired, studying or with other time constraints. Proudly managed on behalf of the DVA by Corporate Health Management (CHM), the program aims to help you increase your physical health and wellbeing through practical exercise support and 12 months of health coaching and advice on healthy lifestyle choices provided by one of our team of highly qualified allied health professionals. Am I eligible? Started 20 years ago for those returned from Vietnam, the Heart Health Program is free and now open to all ex-ADF members and peacekeepers with operational service and those covered by the ADF Firefighters Scheme who have not previously done the Heart Health Program before. The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club run monthly sailing sessions to introduce people to sailing.
It’s a great opportunity to try out sailing in a safe and well-run programme. The sessions run from 0900 to 1300 on Fridays starting at the club at 16 Mitala Street, Newport. Parking at the club is limited so allow time to use their overflow carpark off Crystal Street and walk through the hard-stand and up the steps to Mitala St. Wear soft soled shoes and take a waterproof jacket and have fun. Wednesday MahjongEvery Wednesday, Louise (our wonderful Memorability Manager) and Michelle are hosting a Mahjong game starting at 1300 in the Bistro. There is more than one board available with printed rules and instructions.
Active Avalon BushcareAnother great way to get active and do good work for your community is to volunteer for BUSHCARE. For as little as 3 hours of your time per month, you can help save our environment and demonstrate that the RSL is not just self-serving organisation but a useful contributor to our wider community. We have frequently heard that some ex-service people struggle to integrate into the wider civil community, make new friends, relationships and career opportunities.
