Barrenjoey Veterans Mural @ Avalon Beach RSL Club
Barrenjoey High School has a long and proud connection with the Avalon RSL and Sub-Branch, and it has been a privilege to see that bond strengthened through our recent mural project. Funded by a grant from the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs, this initiative was designed to create a visual tribute to our local veterans while serving as a powerful, hands-on learning tool for our students. This project part of our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) strategy. By engaging Year 9 History students as lead researchers and Year 9 & 10 students as the primary artists, we provided a long-term, collaborative challenge that extended their learning beyond the traditional classroom. Under the guidance of local artist and staff member Guy Hawson, students didn't just study history, they helped preserve it. The most moving part of this journey was the connection forged between generations. Our researchers were inspired to discover the rich military history within Avalon, and our artists were deeply moved to meet the veterans they had painted during the official unveiling. This project has given our students a sense of immense pride and has left our school with a tribute that will educate and inspire.
